The Best New Releases From May 2019

Right in time to kick off summer, the month of May has produced some of the best releases of the year so far. Here are some of the best new releases from May 2019.

EP – Miley Cyrus – SHE IS COMING

SHE IS COMING is Miley Cyrus’ EP leading up to her untitled seventh studio album. The EP includes features from Swae Lee, Ghostface Killah and Miley’s long-time collaborator Mike WiLL Made-It. Straying from her once airy and eccentric feeling music, she’s now showing off more unique trap-inflected pop and rock tracks with raunchy lyrics. It feels like a sound that’s true to her, and it’s the perfect sound to kick off the summer.

EP – Col3trane – Heroine

Col3trane has been releasing singles off this EP since March, including “Superpowers” with GoldLink and “Problems In Us.” The rhythmic r&b EP is short, sweet, and a must listen.

EP – The Chainsmokers – World War Joy

The 14-minute EP has tracks featuring Ty Dolla $ign, 5 Seconds of Summer, Bebe Rexha and more. This EP comes ahead of their fall tour with 5 Seconds of Summer. It’s also the first collection of songs from their forthcoming third studio album.

LP – Steve Lacy – Apollo XXI

The 21-year-old (hence the title) guitarist and producer proves how well he’s doing at being a solo musician with this LP. It’s lighthearted, which strays from some of the stuff he’s released in the past like “C U Girl” and “Dark Red.”

Tyler, the Creator – IGOR

Tyler, the Creator’s sixth studio album came as a surprise. The rapper didn’t announce the album until 11 days before the release. Following the motif of his previous albums, this one also possesses a theme. This time, Tyler describes the cycle and feeling of falling in love, being obsessed, falling out of love, and the aftermath. This is Tyler’s first number one album.

YG – 4REAL 4REAL

4REAL 4REAL is the fourth studio album by rapper YG. After the death of Nipsey Hussle, the album was postponed, and now has a song that pays tribute to him. Features include Tyga, Boogie, G-Eazy, DaBaby, SAFE and more.

Skepta – Ignorance is Bliss

Most people from the U.S. probably know Skepta as the huge co-sign on Drake’s More Life. This UK rappers fifth studio album has been high-anticipated, and a long time coming. This album is experimental, confident, and brilliant to say the least. Features include KEY!, Wizkid, and more.

Flying Lotus – Flamagra

Most of these psychedelic tunes on the 27 song album are purely instrumental. However, this producer makes way for his guests to shine on tracks like “Land of Honey” with Solange, “Black Balloon Reprise” with Denzel Curry and more.
